Government has declared a national emergency in Zota District, Bong County following the invasion of the area by army worms.
At a hurriedly arranged news conference Saturday, Agriculture Minister Dr. Chris Toe said the army worms have already invaded nineteen towns and villages.
Dr. Toe further reported that a seven-man assessment team dispatched to the area reported that the situation was worsening and alarming.
The worm-like caterpillars have reportedly overrun the District headquarters Belefania, including Pay-laylay, Kpoe and the entire Camp Nahma area.
According to Dr.Toe, the worm-like caterpillars are consuming all vegetations in their path and polluting creeks and running water with their faeces.
The Agriculture Minister described the worms as the most destructive pests to agricultural crops in the world.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture has called an emergency gathering of all health and agriculture-related agencies in the country to a meeting on Monday.
The meeting is intended to find a solution to the situation in Zota District.
