Government has announced an increase in transportation fares around the country.

Acting Transport Minister Julius Caesar told Star Radio the new fare structure is due to the increase in the price of petroleum products especially gasoline.

A gallon of gasoline is now being sold at a retail price of 230 Liberian dollars.

In the new fare structure, from Central Monrovia to Paynesville Red-light is 45 Liberian dollars in taxi cab while from Monrovia to Oldroad is now 30 dollars.

Minister Caesar said the decision was taken in consultation with the Ministry of Commerce and Transport Unions.

He said inspectors would be deployed to monitor adherence and warned, serious measures await violators.

This is too expensive for ordinary liberian citizens. If from central Monrovia to red light is $45.00 Liberian dollars, what is the fare from Monrovia to Zorzor, Voinjama, Kolahun, and Foya respectively? What is the government doing to allievate the sufferings of the Liberian People? The only development that I see is more and more hardship being created on the people of Liberia by their own government. With a very high unemployment rate in country, how will people especially students survive or cope with this kind of situation? In the past students were given discount fares. But today nothing like that is hapening. The government has completely forgotten about the students. Many students are going to be out of school simply because their parents cannot afford to pay their way to school. What a tragedy for poor liberian students? This is serious. I am completely out of words to express my frustrations about government being insensitive to the plight of the students. There is no consideration for students. No vacation jobs!
