Youth and Sports Minister Etmonia Tarpeh has released the 2009 progress report of her ministry pledging commitment to youth development.
In the two-page summary report, the Minister describes the development of youth and sports as a critical factor for peace, stability and security.
During the year under review, the Ministry said it provided three hundred thousand U.S. dollars in subsidies to seven national youth organizations.
The money, the Ministry said was intended to assist in developing the groups’ organizational and program implementation capacities.
The Youth and Sports Ministry also boasted of the re-organization of the Liberia National Student Union to hold its Congress for the first time in twenty years.
It also identified the hosting of a three-day regional youth voluntary conference to strategize for the establishment of youth service schemes in the Mano River Union.
The Ministry in collaboration with UNDP also established the National Volunteers Peace Program.
The program trained and deployed thirty youth in the fifteen counties as animators for conflict resolution.
One of the main achievements by the ministry was the training and deployment of a second batch of 121 youth for the National Youth Volunteer Service among others.
The Ministry however identified the lack of adequate resources to expand its NYVS program nation-wide and strengthening of its vocational training centers as major challenges.
