Human Rights Lawyer Cllr. Dempster Brown has provided a legal opinion on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s second term bid at the Legislature last Month.

According to Cllr. Brown, President Sirleaf grossly violated Article 58 of the Constitution.

Cllr. Brown argued the President was sown in to protect and uphold the constitution and the event at the Legislature was not meant for political declaration.

He said although the President has a right to a second term, the forum used for her declaration put her in error.

Cllr. Brown who is also Chairman of the Coalition of Human Rights Defenders believes the president committed an   irreversible error.

On the issue of the Threshold Bill, Cllr. Brown also believes the President insulted the lawmakers by her choice of words.

Days after the President’s response to the passage of the Threshold Bill, opposition lawmakers felt insulted and   demanded an apology from the president.

No law broken.......

The Liberian constitution is silent on the issue. No law was broken. How many times have we had a democratically elected president speak before a legislature that is predominately comprised of opposition members. Hey, bravo to Ellen for taking this bold action, now we have precedent which didn't exist before.

What Cllr. Brown is saying? I can not
believe this kind of argument from
a Cllr.
I believe strongly that the constitution did not say where and
when for a person, a sitting president
to make a bid for a second term.
If that had been written or said in the constitution, article 58 according Cllr, then he failed to
quote that section of the constitution to people who are not
familiar with the Liberian constitution.
To protect and uphold the constitution is very different from
political declaration for a second term by the president.
