At least two persons are reported dead in the violence that erupted in Voinjama, Lofa County early Friday morning.

Our correspondent who visited the Telewoyan Hospital in Voinjama says the bodies had gun-shot wounds.

According to our correspondent, gunfire was heard around Voinjama, but it is not yet clear who did the shooting.

Several other persons are said to have sustained serious gunshot and cutlass wounds.

Earlier, Lofa Superintendent Galakpai Kortamai told Star Radio people from the Mandingo ethnic group were engaged in the violence.

They set ablaze three churches and homes including the catholic mission, and the city mayor’s compound.

Our correspondent says the protesters also set ablaze a vehicle belonging to one of the lawyers who had gone to attend the national bar association conference.

The action was in response to rumors that a mosque in Konia town had been set on fire by students who were protesting the death of a female colleague.

Our correspondent says one person has so far been arrested with a single barrel gun.

Meanwhile, local authorities have imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in Voinjama as UNMIL troops patrol the city to restore calm.

At the sametime, a major jail break has been reported at the Voinjama Central Prison, with over sixty prisoners fleeing.

Our correspondent who visited the prison says the inmates took advantage of the violence in the city and escaped.

Several residents have also fled Voinjama to neighboring towns and villages as tension remains high.

I equally share your opinion and trust peace would only prevail if war crime court is establish to prosecute these criminals who brought untold sufferings on our people.

I quite remember in the early and mid 80s in our one time great city of voinjama, we enjoyed peace and harmony with our nephews - (members of the Mandingo ethnic group) living side by side , intermarriage, with other social affiliations. There were two major foot ball teams in Voinjama - The kazza united and Muslims brothers with cordial relations then. youth groups , elders and locals alike exchange gifts during Christmas and Ramadam celeberations and was indeed a beautiful moment to watch. we celeberated with each other on occassions of interest to the two groups with minimum or no misundetanding to mention the least. Its unfortunate that this these criminals including alahaji g v kromah, charles taylor, and sekou damate konneh would sowed the seeds of discord between the two tribal groups. g .v. kromah, and sekou konneh should join their fellow culprit c g taylor to the ICC to face justice. we are fed up with this lorma & mandingo crisis in Lofa. no one group of people have dominance on violence and should be made to understand frankly.

The time is now that the youth of our county retrospect on the good old days and stop the violence against each other. we have to coexist and accept one another for what we are.

lets put the past behind and forge ahead with our lives for the good of our county. g v kromah, sekou konneh & charles taylor are living - dead creatures who will never find a place into our society again. they are nothing but common criminals.

still tone!!
Violence in Voinjama City

I am compltely shocked and dismayed on the violence in voinjama City. This is why it is necessary to set up a warcrime tribinal in Liberia to prosecute those responsible for introducing violence in Liberia. Individuals are repeating what happpened several years ago in Liberia because nothing has been done to those warlords who caused all these troubles. Well, as a citizen hailing form Lofa County, I wish to appeal for calm and stability. Once upon the time all tribes in Lofa County were at peace with one another before the advent of the civil war which had so badly divided the people of Lofa
county on tribal lines. I lived and atended school in Voinjama. The Loma Tribe call me uncle and I call them nephew because I am Kissi. I had severak schoolmates and friends who were Mandingoes. There was fun always among the tribes.
But the civil conflict had damaged those relationships that one existed. Let those warlords be prosecuted in accordance with the constitution so it will serve as deterent to those are violent thirsty.
Thanks!

Hey Folks, this nonsense has got to stop immediately to allow peaceful returnees enjoy the fragile peace in the county.

There are criminals who still dream of the war days when they commited crimes unabeited with inpunity. Pl be reminded that gone are they days of ULIMO, LDF & LURD where you rain teror on our peaceful people unchecked.

Your so-called leaders sits in Monrovia with no assistance to your war endeavour and have forgotten you completely.

This to let you know that the citizens of Lofa are not weak instead law abiding and could come back with a force' to crush your wicked behaviours.

these criminals are of the belief of being the only creatures on earth having momopoly over violence and lest they forget others could even do more to them.

The Vazela incident is a practical example some years back where they moved on their fellow citizens with cutlasses, single barrels, axe in the quest of their criminal intent. be ware that we are capable of going back to worse situations if you continue your criminal behaviour.

Thank you again for reading my message.

Fellow Liberians, are you not tired of killing one another in the name of religions, tribes, etc ? Do you want to be like Nigeria? I hope not so.

We need to live as brothers irrespective of our religious, tribal or political affiliations. Everyone has the right to religion. As with tribes, we can not change them because we are born in them. Pls, let's live in harmony and in a secular way. No one is more Liberian than his friend.
