The Chairman of the House Committee on Executive says the constitution is not clear on the succession in the House leadership.

Dr. Kertekumen Murray also said the rules of the House are not explicit about who assumes the role of Speaker if he is removed or resigned.

Dr. Murray told Star Radio their rules also fell short of stating how long a person should act when he occupies a vacant position.

However, Article 49 of the Constitution states that the House shall elect once every six years a Speaker, Deputy Speaker and other officers.

Also, Section 41 of the House Rules provides that the Deputy Speaker shall preside if the Speaker resigns, is removed or disabled.

Dr. Murray acknowledged the provisions but argued that they are not clear on how long the person should act.

The House of Representatives last week set up a committee to review the Rules of the House regarding succession.

The committee is expected to report to plenary on Thursday.
