President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has asked Japan to grant Liberia debt relief and help develop the country’s private sector.

Madam Sirleaf said the debt burden was a huge impediment to the country’s progress.

Presidential Press Secretary Cyrus Wleh-Badio could not state the actual amount Liberia owes the Asian country but said it is a significant amount.

Mr. Wleh-Badio said the debt relief request was made during an official meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

He said Japanese Prime Minister challenged government to ensure security and stability in the country, stating it was a major factor to attract Japan’s investors.

He also requested Liberia’s cooperation as Japan aims for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

At the same time, South Africa has agreed to contribute three million US dollars toward the debt of over two hundred million dollars Liberia owes the African Development Bank.
