UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon has recommended an extension of the UN Peacekeeping operations in Liberia by one-year.

Mr. Ban said despite numerous successes to bolster peace and economic progress in Liberia, the country still faces many obstacles.

He named the obstacles as poverty, high unemployment and incapacitated public services.

The UN Secretary General said Liberia also faces significant reconstruction and development challenges arising from more than fourteen years of civil war.

The recommendation was contained in his latest report to the Security Council on the situation in Liberia,

The report points to the threat to stability stemming from high unemployment, which also affects ex-combatants and deactivated security personnel.

The Secretary-General expressed concern about the situations in neighboring Ivory Coast and Guinea as regards stability in Liberia.

Mr. Ban wants the UN Security Council extend the mandate of UNMIL, which expires the end of this month.
