Liberian lawyer wants re-imbursement for defeated presidential candidates Print E-mail

A prominent Liberian lawyer has recommended reimbursements for defeated candidates in future elections.

Cllr. Marcus Jones said such reimbursement was necessary because individuals who take part in elections to gain political power do so for the benefit of the public.

Cllr. Jones recommended that a reasonable amount be given to defeated candidates to cover their expenses.

The Former Bar President said the National Elections Commission must certify the reimbursement.

He also suggested that the President of Liberia be given the power to appoint all local officials except for county superintendents and paramount chiefs.

Cllr. Jones said superintendents and paramount chiefs should be elected during the general and presidential elections.

He spoke Friday at a one-day electoral reform forum sponsored by OSIWA and implemented by the National Elections Commission.

I believe Cllr. Jones deserves some commendations for his abilities to think outside of the box for the sake of peace. I am not sure he declared the reimbursement of defeated candidates with the primary view of its importance in either alleviating the thoughts of conflict or minimizing the noise that surrounds the results of elections. No matter what his objective, I do strongly believe that it is a good idea and it will, in future elections, have good consequences. Most of the noises and intents to wage war as a result of electoral defeats, arise due to the inabilities of those defeated to cope with their financial losses and sometimes meet up with loan repayments, incurred during the electoral campaigns.
Cllr. Jones, I believe that guys like you should consider to the idea of Liberia moving towards dual or multi citizenship, which has a signicant benefit. There are many Liberians who have acquired different citizenships but still consider Liberia home. These individauls could return with vast technological skills, high quality education and many more that could benefit the nation in general and that is what the country needs now and in the future as she struggles towards advancement.
That\'s a bogus recommemdation.

Mr. Jones should realize that candidates who decide to run for public positions in Liberia are suitable citizens with vision to lead our country to a better tomorrow. Therefore, they all must be willing to make the necessary financial scarifies. Running for any public office is not a task that people should consider lightly. It requires conviction, sound judgment and the best level of qualifications. With those qualifications comes the ability to rise-funds, support their vision to lift Liberia.
