UNMIL troops have begun regular patrols with security at the Firestone Rubber Plantation.

According to a release, the patrols are intended to combat the growing wave of illicit tapping in the concession area.

The release said UNMIL Civilian Police Unit and the Liberian National Police Support Unit are part of the joint exercise.

During the operation, the entire Firestone area would be searched in order to weed out unwanted individuals roaming the plantation.

Firestone has been a breeding ground for illicit tapping and rubber related thefts carried out by unknown persons.

Several Firestone workers have been either killed or wounded in series of attacks by the illicit tappers.
