The Chairman Emeritus of the opposition United People’s Party and veteran politician, Gabriel Baccus Matthews is dead.


He was 59.
 

Mr. Matthews died today at the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital in Monrovia.
 

Hospital authorities could not disclose the cause of death to newsmen but the veteran politician had been suffering from internal bleeding for quite sometime.
 

Mr. Matthews was taken to Ghana twice for the same health problem.
 

From the age of twenty-six, Mr. Matthews led a progressive campaign for multi-party system in the country.
 

There are more than twenty registered political parties in Liberia today.
 

Mr. Matthews lived a controversial life while different interpretation about political work.
 

While his critics say he failed as a politician, his supporters argue that he changed Liberia’s political landscape forever.

my condolense goes to the family of Mr. matthew and all liberian. He was one of the greatest son of our land. He fought and change the shape and way we think of democracy. He was a man who stood for justice and equality. He was provocative and he pave the way for we young politican.He condemn the culture of silence and advocated free speech.we have lost a great son.Mr.mathews you will forever be remember in liberian history. rest in peace
