The outgoing head of UNMIL Alan Doss has called for more effective ways to stop rape.
Mr. Doss observed that rape is the most frequently committed serious crime in Liberia.
He said rape must be stop before more women and girls are hurt and abused.
Mr. Doss spoke at the launched of a joint nationwide anti-rape campaign last week under the auspices of Government and UNMIL.
The launch followed calls from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Mr. Doss for an accelerated national response to prevent and punish rape in Liberia.
UN Police Commissioner, Mohammed Alhassan said rape should “no longer be considered family business”.
Commissioner Alhassan disclosed that there had been increased reports of rape cases in 2007 – from 351 reports in 2006 to 425 in 2007.
He said UN Police would continue to work with the Liberia National Police to ensure that there is no hiding place for rapists.
