President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has expressed shock and disbelief news of the assassination of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Madam Benazir Bhutto.

An Executive Mansion statement said President Sirleaf is deeply disturbed and saddened by the events in Pakistan.

The President said the death of Ms. Bhutto is, indeed, a big blow to women empowerment throughout the world.

She stressed that Bhutto’s assassination is not only an affront to democracy but also a big blow to the advancement of women struggling for equal political representation.

The Liberian President said the assassination must be condemned by all peace loving nations and individuals around the world in no uncertain terms.

The statement said Liberia calls on the Pakistani government to bring to book the perpetrators and ensure they face the full weight of the law.

President Sirleaf appealed to the women of Pakistan and women the world over, not to be deterred by this barbaric and cowardice act.

She maintained, it should rather serve as a rallying point to galvanize all women of the world to continue to press for the rights of women to be represented and heard at all levels.
