The first Liberian to testify against detained former President Charles Taylor in The Hague says he faked his insanity in Monrovia when Mr. Taylor was in power.

Mr. Vamuyan Sheriff told the Special Court he made himself stupid because Mr. Taylor wanted him and others to go attack Sierra Leone and Guinea.

According to Mr. Sheriff, he never wanted to be part of any attack on the two countries with which he has family ties.

Lead defense lawyer, Courteney Griffiths ended his cross-examination of Mr. Sheriff, insisting that Mr. Sheriff received bribe to lie on Mr. Taylor.

The defense lawyer stated dates on which Mr. Sheriff received money he did not work for.

Mr. Sheriff denied taking bribe and maintained money he received was reimbursement of expenses he incurred.

Meanwhile, the prosecution’s next witness is a Sierra Leonean who is expected to take the stand Tuesday.
