Ship with 90 barrels of cocaine arrested Print E-mail

A ship bearing Liberian Flag has been arrested in international waters and escorted to the Freeport of Monrovia.
 

A French Navy gun-boat arrested the ship, identified as Blue Atlantic, with ninety barrels of cocaine and other hard wares.
 

The French Ambassador to Liberia said crew members of the ship include Ghanaians and other nationals.
 

Ambassador Jacques Gerard told reporters the ship was heading to the Nigeria’s commercial city of Lagos or a neighboring West African state.
 

According to Ambassador Gerard, the cocaine on the ship worth several millions of United States dollars.
 

Liberia
’s Justice Minister Philip Banks signed an official document for the cocaine to be turned over of the Liberian government.
 

According to Minister Banks, the cocaine would be burnt following consultations with environmentalists and other national stakeholders.
 

According to the report, the French Navy team arrived at the Freeport of Monrovia Thursday night with the ship.
 

Drugs trafficking in the West African sub-region has claimed the attention of regional security officials.
 

Two weeks ago, Ghana’s Minister of Interior admitted the region was a major transit point for drugs traffickers.
