UNMIL contractors go 'ALUTA' Print E-mail

Hundreds of contractors of the UN mission have today taken to the streets in demand of salary increment.

The contractors are staging the protest in front of UNMIL headquarters in Sinkor with banners accusing the UN-Mission of unfair labor practice.

The contractors called for a pay rise ranging from five hundred and forty United States dollars to eight hundred.

They claimed the current one hundred and sixty US dollars wage being paid by UNMIL is too small.

They said although their grievances were initially put forth to UNMIL authorities only a few of their colleagues are benefiting.

A spokesman of the group said the UNMIL National Staff Association channeled their grievances during a meeting in New York.

Mr. Murray Browne however, said since the meeting some contractors have not benefited.

Meanwhile, the Public Information section of UNMIL says it would issue a statement shortly to react to concerns raised by the contractors.
