Fourteen of the sixteen Liberian refugees deported by the government of Ghana are being verified as legally registered refugees in the country.
Our reporter said Liberian immigration authorities are still verifying the status of the two other refugees deported from Ghana.
The Ghanaian government said the Liberians deported were not registered refugees but were living in Ghana illegally.
According to our reporter, the Liberians are holders of official refugee cards issued by the United Nations Refugee Agency in collaboration with the government of Ghana.
The UNHCR card carries the photo, name, date and place of birth of the person to whom it is issued.
Meanwhile, several human rights groups in Ghana are unhappy with the treatment their government meted out to the Liberian refugees.
