Humanity United gives STAR radio generous grant

One of our top goals this year at STAR radio is to broaden our base of support to include new types of donor and partners from different countries.   This was achieved this year when Global Giving (www.globalgiving.com) agreed to our request to include STAR Radio on its internet platform which allows individuals  to fund international projects of interest, and for Americans to donate on a tax-free basis.  Since we posted a project description on Global Giving four months ago, STAR Radio has earned a total of $3,000 donated by a dozen  individuals.  We learned recently that Humanity United, a grant-making organization based in California, will donate $130,000 to STAR Radio in Liberia through the Global Giving site.   Many thanks to Global Giving and Humanity United for their generous support to STAR radio!
GSM providers call for negotiation with LTA Print E-mail

GSM service providers in Liberia have called for a negotiated settlement into a dispute with the Liberia Telecommunications Authority.

The service providers and the LTA are locked in a deadlock over the standardization of their operations.

The GSM operators said the LTA is reportedly interpreting the standardization chapter set in the Telecommunications act to review their licenses.

They said the LTA is also demanding one hundred thousand US dollars from the companies as processing fees.

The four GSM companies further said they have gathered that the LTA is requesting five million US dollars as a contribution to the National Budget.

According to the companies they paid ten million U.S. dollars in taxes in 2006/2007.

Senior managers of Commiun, Cellcom, Libercell and Lone Star made the disclosure during a hearing with the Senate’s Post and Telecommunications Committee.

The committee has requested the GSM operators to formally submit a document detailing their concerns.
