Global Giving is an on-line marketplace which allows people to donate to international projects that appeal to their interests and STAR radio is now a Global Giving project! This means that our American supporters may now make tax-deductible donations to STAR.
Humanity United gives STAR radio generous grant
One of our top goals this year at STAR radio is to
broaden our base of support to include new types of donor and partners from
different countries. This was achieved
this year when Global Giving (www.globalgiving.com)
agreed to our request to include STAR Radio on its internet platform which
allows individuals to fund international
projects of interest, and for Americans to donate on a tax-free basis. Since we posted a project description on
Global Giving four months ago, STAR Radio has earned a total of $3,000 donated
by a dozen individuals. We learned recently that Humanity United, a
grant-making organization based in California, will donate $130,000 to STAR
Radio in Liberia through the Global Giving site. Many
thanks to Global Giving and Humanity United for their generous support to STAR
radio!
House holds Public Hearing on Defense Act
Written by Julius Kanubah
Friday, 09 May 2008
Human Rights defender Dempster Brown has called on the House of Representatives to return the draft Defense Act to the Executive.
Cllr. Brown said the draft Defense Act has several problems and must not be passed into law unless modifications are made.
According to him, the draft Act lacks several components required of any standard armed forces.
He identified the missing battalions as engineering, agriculture, field artillery, service support and executive mansion guard.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Security Adviser has described Cllr. Brown’s statement as reckless.
Dr. Boimah Fahnbulleh said the learned human rights lawyer was speaking without any knowledge of the draft Defense Act.
Dr. Fahnbulleh said it is not a standard practice to include all of the structures mentioned by Cllr. Brown in the draft defense act.
Dr. Fahnbulleh and Mr. Cllr. Brown spoke during a hearing at the House on the draft Defense Act, which was also addressed by former Defense Minister Daniel Chea.
