Humanity United gives STAR radio generous grant

One of our top goals this year at STAR radio is to broaden our base of support to include new types of donor and partners from different countries.   This was achieved this year when Global Giving (www.globalgiving.com) agreed to our request to include STAR Radio on its internet platform which allows individuals  to fund international projects of interest, and for Americans to donate on a tax-free basis.  Since we posted a project description on Global Giving four months ago, STAR Radio has earned a total of $3,000 donated by a dozen  individuals.  We learned recently that Humanity United, a grant-making organization based in California, will donate $130,000 to STAR Radio in Liberia through the Global Giving site.   Many thanks to Global Giving and Humanity United for their generous support to STAR radio!

The UN Envoy in Liberia, Ellen Løj says UNMIL will not allow any disruptions in the current peace while it is maintaining peace in Liberia.

Ms. Løj made reference to a recent armed clash in Maryland County between the people of Rock Town and Wetchoken.

The clash left two persons dead and dozens injured.

The UN envoy spoke when she awarded medals to the departing 7th UNMIL Senegalese Battalion after five years of peacekeeping duties in Liberia.

The Senegalese would be replaced by Ethiopian peacekeepers in the southeastern county.

Ms. Loj said a careful approach is being taken in the readjustment of UNMIL forces.

She re-assured that the drawdown does not mean the UN mission is rushing out of Liberia.

Ms. Loj said the UN would continue to help government reform the security sector, strengthen rule of law and implement the Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Meanwhile, a Maryland lawmaker has described as a common threat the recent outbreak of violence in the county.

Senator John Ballout called on all parties to the land dispute to exercise restraint.

Senator Ballout termed as unfortunate the weekend violence between Rock and Wetchuken Towns which left two persons dead and several others wounded.

He said about forty-two persons were also arrested in connection with the incident.

Senator Ballout said the land dispute is worrisome and must be settled before it degenerates into a full scale crisis.
The Maryland Senior Senator said the dialogue process is continuing between the conflicting parties.

According to him, calm has returned to the area and that the local authorities, Police and UNMIL forces were investigating the incident.
