American Major Soccer League club D.C. United has reached an agreement in principle with Liberian International goalkeeper Louis Crayton.
The 30 year old needs to pass a physical and have his International Transfer Certificate processed before becoming eligible to play for DC United.
United officials have so far declined to comment on the negotiations.
Crayton has been primarily a backup the past three seasons for Swiss champion FC Basel, his eighth team in 11 seasons.
He previously started for Concordia Basel in the second division.
His international career has included 36 appearances for Liberia's national team, but he was not on the roster for recent 2010 World Cup qualifiers.
He also has a Swiss citizenship.
If the deal is finalized, Crayton would become the second Liberian on United's roster, joining forward Francis Doe.
The club has been seeking an experienced goalie to challenge Zach Wells for playing time since waiving Jose Carvallo of Peru last month.
Wells recorded his first regular season shutout last weekend, but has performed inconsistently since being acquired last winter from Houston.
