Liberia's stability under threat, says UN boss Print E-mail

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says Liberia’s fragile stability is threatened by the struggle with the rule of law and competition over natural resources.


Mr. Ban however, said in his progress report on Liberia’s economy shows significant improvement.
 

The UN Secretary General UN recommended a 12-month extension to UNMIL’s mandate through September 2009.
 

According to Mr. Ban, much needs to be done urgently to strengthen the capacities of the Police and the army to facilitate their presence throughout the country.
 

He said sixty percent of Liberia’s population lives below the poverty line despite increase in the country’s GDP and reduction in its external debts.
 

Mr. Ban observed that recent upsurge in fuel and food prices as well as instability in Guinea and Ivory Coast could have negative implications for security in Liberia.
 

He assured that UNMIL would continue to discharge its mandate of maintaining a stable and secure environment to assist the government carry on its reform program.
 

Meanwhile, a new UNMIL report on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse shows five allegations involving UN staff covering the period January to June.
 

According to the report, the allegations show a decrease as compared to nine reported in 2007 from July to December.
 

The head of UNMIL Ellen Loj told the regular press briefing Wednesday one out of two allegations was not substantiated while investigation into another was ongoing.
 

Madam Loj said of the remaining two allegations, one UN staff resigned for what she called unrelated reasons prior to the on-set of the investigation.
 

She said the other UN personnel connected with the last SEA allegation is under investigation by the Office of Internal Oversight Services.
 

Madam Loj said the final investigation report from those cases is awaited.
 

The UNMIL Chief re-emphasized the Secretary General’s zero tolerance police on sexual exploitation and abuse.
 

Madam Loj assured the mission remains firm and resolute in ensuring that appropriate disciplinary measures are taken for any proven SEA misconduct.
