The National Port Authority says it has reduced cargo-handling charges at the Port of Buchanan by 40 percent as part of government’s poverty reduction strategy.

Mr. George Tubman said the move is in support of the port sector reform and the transition to privatization to invite foreign capital into the port industry.

He believes the move would help boost the economy and provide greater efficiency in the operations of the port.

Mr. Tubman said Liberian ports are catalysts in economic development and providing the interface of two forms of transportation in water and land.

The Managing Director also said the NPA has the lowest tariff in the sub-region and that makes it difficult for the port to undertake major development.

Mr. Tubman told Star Radio the tariff of the NPA has not been reviewed for years now.
