Former Interim President Amos Sawyer has given justification for the printing of millions of Liberia dollar banknotes during his administration.

According to Dr. Sawyer, his government changed the currency because people had looted banks and were holding unto huge sums of money.

Dr. Sawyer said his administration treated the currency situation as a security issue.

He said the introduction of the new liberty banknotes rescued the country’s economy and reduced looters to poverty.

On the issue of the infamous black beret security forces, Dr. Sawyer said consultations were held with leaders of the sub-region to form an auxiliary force, which could work along with ECOMOG.

Dr. Sawyer said the Guinean-trained black beret forces performed with distinction by reducing the wave of insecurity in Monrovia at the time.

He said prior to the formation of the group, Monrovia was very insecure.

Dr. Sawyer also made a number of recommendations among which he called for those who lied under oath at the TRC to be prosecuted.

The former interim president said by prosecuting liars, the credibility and integrity of the TRC would be upheld.

Dr. Sawyer spoke Thursday when he testified before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission at its ongoing thematic hearings.
