The Press Union of Liberia has cautioned journalists against fueling tension amidst the anxieties and bitterness being generated at the truth commission.

The PUL said the media bear a distinct responsibility in enhancing the reconciliation process and must not facilitate chaos and ethnic bickering.

The union believes that the idea of the TRC is a unique opportunity for Liberians to deal with their violent past and correct their history.

As such, the media umbrella organization stressed that the media cannot afford to take away from the process by promoting extremism.

The PUL said it is aware of the critical nature of the healing process when old memories are brought up but challenged journalists to help in calming any tension.

In a statement issued in Monrovia, the union observed listening to the various stories, there will be people with hate messages.

The union said it is concerned because journalists stand accused if they dramatize the irreconcilable differences between parties with extreme positions and inflammatory statements.

The statement signed by the PUL’s Secretary General Peter Quaqua urged all stakeholders to allow the truth commission to perform its mandate.
