The Search for Common Ground/Talking Drum Studio has hosted a National Identity Forum in Kakata, Margibi County.
The forum was intended to talk about the sensitive issue of national identity in a non-politicized manner.
The group observed for too long, citizens’ names and associations gave them access to resources, privilege and political power in Liberia.
A statement issued by the Talking Drum Studio further observed that in order instances, the discourse around identity has been regressive and divisive.
The statement said several prominent people were invited to serve as keynote speakers including Senator Gloria Musu Scott.
The presentations covered a range of topics from the role of identity in accessing justice, to its function in the election process and democracy.
Speaking at the forum, Senator Scott said tribal identity makes us see other tribes as a threat, so we feel threatened by our society.
The former Chief Justice also noted that the socio and political environment was also reinforcing this occurrence.
The Talking Drum Studio said the National Identity Forum was made possible through support from the UK’s Department for International Development.
