Father Robert Tikpor of the Catholic Church says the establishment of a war crimes court in Liberia will undermine the peace and security of the country.

Father Tikpor called on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission not to recommend the establishment of a war crimes court.

Father Tikpor believes that such recommendation would not solve the country’s problem.

He spoke Monday at Liberia’s TRC Thematic Hearing on Historical Review.

According to him, the establishment of an international war crimes court in Liberia would ensure a return of the country to the path of confusion.

He instead recommended that leaders of the former warring factions be granted amnesty so that the country can remain peaceful.

Father Tikpor admonished Liberians to allow God to decide the fate of members of the former warring factions.

The Catholic Prelate clarified that his recommendation was personal and not the position of the Catholic Church in Liberia.

The Catholic Church in Liberia officially declared its support for the establishment of a war crimes court for Liberia.

Meanwhile, the Forum for the Establishment of a War Crimes Court in Liberia has planned what it called a million-man match on Monrovia.

The National Chairman of the forum said the match is intended to make the government and the international community establish the court to prosecute warlords.

Mr. Mulbah Morlu said the establishment of the court was necessary to prosecute the warlords who he said have failed to admit their wrongs to the TRC.

Mr. Morlu told Star Radio the October 3 match would see the demonstrators wearing black T-Shirts and carrying palm branches in their hands.

He said the black T-Shirts would signify the morning of the victims of the civil conflict including survival victims of massacres.

The head of the War Crimes Forum advocacy group said the waving of palm branches would show that despite being victimized, the Liberian people are up for peace.
