The prosecution witness on the stand at the trial of detained former President Charles Taylor on Wednesday made a startling revelation in The Hague.
The 37th witness told the UN-backed Special Court that former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo encouraged the relationship between Taylor and the RUF rebel movement.
The witness said at a July 26 meeting held in Monrovia in 2002, President Obassanjo praised the relationship between Charles Taylor and the RUF.
The witness said Mr. Obassanjo told the RUF delegation to keep up the relationship with Mr. Taylor.
The witness said Taylor gave Issa Sesay 15-thousand U.S. dollars following a meeting with the African leader and promised continual support to the RUF.
According to him, after the meeting, Issa Sesay and delegation boarded Taylor’s Anti-Terrirorist Unit helicopter and flew back to Sierra Leone via Foya in Lofa County, northwestern Liberia.
