Catholic Church split over war crimes court Print E-mail

Contradictory statements are emerging from the Catholic Church of Liberia on its position on the establishment of a war crimes court in the country.

The Catholic Bishop Conference in a release said the Catholic Church is officially in support of the TRC process rather than the establishment of a war crimes court.

The statement comes weeks after the Church’s Administrative head gave support to the setting up of a war crimes court as the official position of the Catholic community in Liberia.

Father Andrew Karnley in July said the position was contained in a Pastoral letter carved by Catholic Bishop Conference of Liberia in 2004.

However, CABICOL in its release said the decision to commit and support the TRC was reached at the Accra Peace Accord and reaffirmed at its annual conference in 2006.

CABICOL says it officially represents and speaks for the Catholic Church and called on the public to consider all other views as personal views.

The conference then mandates the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission to undertake programs to enhance the work of the TRC at all levels.

The latest position from the Catholic Church contradicts a January 4, 2004 publication of the Bishops Conference on the establishment of a war crimes court in Liberia.

The publication entitled: Liberia, at a crossroad, Hopes and Challenges was endorsed by the all the Catholic Bishops including Archbishop Michael Kpakala Francis.

It is Reconciliation, not war crimes cou

The establishment of a war crimes court in Liberia at this time will be contradictory to the whole process of the “Truth and Reconciliation Commission,” that is responsible for bringing about reconciliation, forgiveness, healing, and lasting peace amongst all Liberians. The TRC is recognized and supported by the international community, and was instituted by an act of legislation for the sole purpose of restoring genuine peace and unity in Liberia.
Moreover, the Catholic Church of Liberia has always supported the idea of the TRC from its inception at the peace accord in Accra, Ghana. Therefore, it is hard to believe that the Catholic Church at this time will consent to the idea of a war crimes court that will undermine and derail the reconciliation procedure in Liberia. However, I humbly plead with all those who are advocating for a war crimes court in Liberia, to go before the TRC and confront their offenders for the crimes committed against them. It is my fervent prayer that all Liberians will ask God to grant them the courage to forgive those who committed atrocities against them, because reconciliation is uncertain without forgiveness.
