The Liberian Retirees and Pensioners Association has written President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, appealing for the review of their pension benefits.

President Sirleaf in 2006 increased by one thousand Liberian dollars the benefits of all pensioners from the public sector.

Before the President announced the increase, pensioners were receiving seventy-five to two hundred Liberian dollars per month.

In a letter dated August 29, 2008, the pensioners said they appreciate the President’s concern but called for a review to reflect the cost of living in the country.

The letter signed by three officials of the association suggested to government to raise a pensioner’s monthly benefit to the equivalent of fifty U.S. dollars.

The pensioners said they are now in retirement and what they are receiving from government is their only hope for survival.
