The fleet of vehicles donated by Acelor Mittal has formally been distributed among members of the Legislature.
Acelor Mittal provided the vehicles to government through President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who transferred the usage to the lawmakers.
Our Legislative correspondent says the brand new Mitsubishi pickups totaling one hundred were scattered at various parking lots at the Capital building.
According to our reporter some lawmakers were testing the vehicles by taking a ride in the compound of the Capital building.
The acceptance of the vehicles by the lawmakers has raised concerns in the public given the direct source of the donation, Acelor Mittal.
Some legislative analysts believe the donation by Acelor Mittal is an indirect form of inducement for future help to the Company.
Our reporter says the donation comes as the Legislature has for the third time postponed its agriculture break to act upon bills from the President.
Meanwhile, Grand Bassa County Senior Senator Gbezongar Finley turned over his Acelor Mittal-donated vehicle to his county’s agricultural sector.
Senator Finley presented the vehicle to the Agriculture Ministry for onward submission to the Coordinator of the Bassa agriculture team.
The Grand Bassa lawmaker described the donation as a small token intended to help enhance the work of small-scale farmers in the county.
Senator Finley hopes his kinsmen would benefit from the Mitsubishi pick-up marked with license plate RL-1169.
Agriculture Minister Chris Toe thanked Senator Finley for the donation and described it as a major development worthy of emulation.
A total of one hundred new vehicles were donated to government by the world’s richest ore company Acelor Mittal.
The vehicles are being turned over to lawmakers but the motive remains unclear.

This just laughable Written by Titus Kwenah, on 2008-09-16 20:00:10 I guess only in Liberia this sort of thing is possible. Where are ethics gurus here in the management level of this company? I am not even concerned with these so-called representative of the people. I guess if a FDI[?] can give these sort of gifts to law makers, they might just as well buy the country. |
