The House of Representatives has approved a Joint Resolution for a national referendum to amend certain provisions of the Constitution.

Key provisions of the resolution include the amendment of the absolute majority, reduction of senatorial term and the residency clause.

The resolution calls for a simple majority, a six-year term for both Senators and Representatives.

The joint resolution has been sent for the Senate for concurrence.

Meanwhile the House has dismissed the impeachment petition filed against Chief Justice Johnny Lewis.

Magistrate Peter Gosahn filed the petition after he accused the Chief Justice of several administrative breaches.

The House Judiciary Committee said it could not file a bill of impeachment against Justice Lewis because Magistrate Gosahn’s petition lacks substance.

Meanwhile, the Senate has announced a review of the financial autonomy of the Judiciary.

The decision was announced Tuesday by the Acting President Pro Tempore of the Senate following a secret session.

Acing Pro Temp Lahai Lassana said the review is to ensure that certain laws in the Act granting financial autonomy to the Judiciary are balanced.

Senator Lassana did not provide details on the laws to be reviewed.

The announcement comes weeks after the Senate faced Chambers Justice Jamesetta Wolokollie.

Suspended Pro Temp Isaac Nyenabo took the Senate to court, protesting what he calls his illegal suspension.
