A son of detained former President Charles Taylor is expected to go on trial this week in the United States of America.
Charles Taylor Jr., commonly called Chuckie, is in detention in the United States for crimes he allegedly committed during his father’s rule in Liberia.
American Federal Prosecutors say Chuckie committed heinous human rights crimes in Liberia mainly against people who opposed the Taylor’s government.
Chuckie is the first American to be tried under a 1994 law, making it a crime for U.S. citizens to commit torture overseas.
Chuckie was born in the United States in 1977 when his father was in school in Boston.
The son of the former Liberian President pleaded not guilty to the charges, which carry a combined possible sentence of life in prison.
His lawyer contends the people who say they were victims are lying to get political asylum from the American government.
Chuckie who was commander of his father’s Presidential elite guard, the Anti-Terrorist Unit, was arrested three years ago at an airport in the United States.
American security said Chuckie entered the United States with a false name, Charles MacArthur Emmanuel.
