President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has called on the United Nations to support UNMIL at appropriate levels to continue its mandate in Liberia.

President Sirleaf wants the support to continue until the peace is properly consolidated in the country.

Addressing the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, President Sirleaf said the support would remove the threat of the country relapsing into conflict.

According to President Sirleaf, the presence of UNMIL has given hope to Liberians and made them not to surrender to threats to peace and development.

She named the high percentage of unemployed youths, and high crime rates including armed robberies as representatives of the threats to peace.

President Sirleaf also spoke on the issue of Aid Effectiveness calling for a move from aid to trade and long term development initiative.

She wants both donor and recipient to account for aid and again stressed the urgency in reducing the timeframe between commitment and delivery.

President Sirleaf’s address to the UN General Assembly also highlighted progress made in all sectors of the Liberian society since 2006.
