The President of the University of Liberia Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh has finally relinquished power.

At a farewell program, Dr. Conteh cautioned the UL faculty to hold itself to the highest possible standards of research and intellectual achievement.

He took off time to outline his achievement at the university and hoped things would improve as time progresses.

The convocation program was attended by members of the diplomatic community, government officials and well-wishers.

Dr. Conteh assumed the mantle of leadership at the university on December 1, 2004 amidst stiff opposition from the UL faculty.

His four-year leadership was saddled with persistent strike actions by the faculty over salaries and benefits.

He however described his administration as successful as teachers’ salaries and benefits have now been   regularized.

Meanwhile, the Board of Trustees of the University has named Ansu Soni as Acting President of the University of Liberia.

Dr. Conteh is leaving to serve as Liberia’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Dr. Conteh, has played a major role in restructuring the university and its staffs. Whatever, the case maybe when it comes to judgments there is nothing we can do to hold someone responsible if we have no parable cause that uphold the person accountable for such wrong doing. Dr. Conteh, leaving is not an exit point to resolving the mismanagement problem at the university. Our higher institution of learning should be well managed to meet high standard like other schools around the world.

I pleased for Dr. Conteh four service at the University of Liberia and for his numerous contributions made over the years to help bring meaningful changes to the institution. As for me, Dr. Conteh's imput and leardership will be remebbered and together have sent a message of institutional correction that is needed at level in major institutions and organizations throughout Liberia because Liberia does not only need individuals with higher education but those who actually want to commit themselves and work for the people. And in that light Dr. Conted along with some key members of his team did initiat that measure to set the page for the next leadership, but I think, there is a pending question that has not been answered or addressed by the administrative staff at the University, of which Dr. Conteh was still a part before his religuished of power as president of the University.

It would be very interesting and helpful for the Liberian people to better make sense of what really went wrong at the University and who is actually responsible for missing funds. Here, Dr. Conteh is needed to interven in the interest of transperancy and accountibility so that those involved can be brought to light because an effective and efficient leadership is mainly about trust and sincerity. So, it would be wise if Dr. Conteh not only step aside as president, but also asks law makers and the president to probe into the matter so that said malpractice cannot be repeated. If Dr. Conteh leaves with resolving the matter, who will the Liberian people expect to undertake the responsibility? I am truly afriad that Dr. Conteh may be affecting the institution by not accounting for such terrible practice that took place during his administration era as president for the University of Liberia.
