A demobilized soldier of the Armed Forces of Liberia has explained to the truth commission how four military officers were taken from prison and executed in 1998.
Blamo Monger alias “General Butt Naked” identified the officers executed as General Samuel Varnii, Colonel Daniel K. Bracewell, Edward T. Zamay and John Teayah.
Monger explained that the men stood at the entrance of their cells as they shouted the names of the prisoners.
He told the TRC military men loyal to President Charles Taylor released four men accused of sedition from the Post Stockade military prison and executed them.
Monger testified at the ongoing Institutional and Thematic Inquiry Public Hearings of Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The witness said during the roll call, prisoners who answered to their names were brought out and whisked off to an unknown destination.
He named those that were taken out of the prison as Col. Thomas Doeway, a career soldier, Col. Saydee, Col. Boelue and another civilian
They were accused of sedition following the September 18, 1998 Camp Johnson Road fracas.
Monger added that he and other detainees were only spared when they refused to answer to their names.
