The Chief Prosecutor of Liberia says government has no policy against free speech.

Solicitor General Tiawan Gongloe said the UP-led government is committed to protecting people’s right to free speech.

Cllr. Gongloe was reacting to the recent arrest and detention of Mulbah Morlu for calling President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf a rebel.

Cllr. Gongloe said there are laws on the books that needed to be removed because they are anti-democratic and responsible for such arrests.

He named the anti-free speech laws as criminal malevolence, criminal libel and sedition.

Cllr. Gongloe said efforts will be made to remove such laws before the end of this regime.

The Solicitor General said only weak governments arrest people for expressing strong views and urged state security agencies to be aware.
